It’s a victory for Gay Marriage in D.C! In march 2010, DC became the sixth place in the nation where same-sex marriages can take place alongside with Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. The court of appeals ruled 5–4 that the proposed proposal would permit discrimination against gays and lesbians in the district, which is prohibited by the D.C. Human Rights Act. The line to apply for a marriage license was composed of couples of different races from all generations. By the end of the day, 151 couples had filed to be married, by far more than the the dozen or so applications the bureau typically collects on a single day. The court’s ruling is a significant victory for justice, and the protection of all D.C. residents against inequity. It shows that legalizing gay marriage is finally building on the American's tradition of moving civil rights forward and erasing discrimination of the past and providing homosexuals with the same rights and privileges as heterosexuals.
