The U.S. Census Bureau states that poverty in America is estimated to affect 35.9 million people with 13 million being children and 70% being women. The Current Population Survey (CPS) combined with the 2010 Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC) has found that in 2009, 43.6 million people were in poverty, which is the largest number in the 51 years for which poverty estimates have been published!
In 2010 it has become more common to see people walking down the street holding signs begging for money and sleeping nearby churches.
Since we’ve acquired a 13 trillion dollar debt it seems as though poverty will continue to repeat itself for years to come until the pattern is somehow broken. So far legislation has done very little to end poverty in the US.My speech will show the importance of immediately tackling this important issue while offering solutions that would break this damaging pattern.
If we are able to stop poverty in its tracks, we would see a decrease in other “social problems that are influenced by poverty such as selling drugs to make money to survive in poverty, and engaging in prostitution to make money to survive in poverty”, among other things. And as Americans it is our duty to make an effort to eliminate poverty in the US.
Wow this is a lot of information!! I didn't know it was so much, its crazy! But we as Americans do have to make it a more serious concern before this world we call home goes down! -Good topic
